Participate In Our Research From October to November

Our citizen science project aims to determine the optimal fava bean planting dates throughout the diverse landscapes of California, Oregon, and Nevada. Community participants are asked to plant seed in a small garden bed, record fava growth data, take photographs, and help us expand our fava bean recipe book. No prior gardening experience or expertise is required - we’ll help you out along the way. Plus, it’s free to join!

How to Participate October - November

  1. Receive seeds and a scientist ID by picking up seed packets from Drs. Zakeri and Brasier at a farmer’s market, clicking the “Request Seed” button, or by email request. Participation is free from October to November!
    Email: kgbrasier@csuchico.edu

  2. Plant the two fava bean varieties (‘Windsor’ and ‘Vroma’) in single rows with 42 to 60 inch row spacing and a a seed spacing of 8 to 10 inches.

  3. Record plant notes by filling our your printed form and clicking the '“Submit Data” button below. Don’t forget to record planting date!

  4. Take as many pictures as you’d like from planting until vegetable harvest and upload them on our website’s Gallery page.

  5. Try out some fun recipes and share what you made.

Data Sheet

The Fava Bean Data Sheet provides a table to record information about plant growth over the winter growing season. The sheet also provides some helpful information about how to collect the data and why it is important for the project. Thank you for participating!
